Vegetarian Restaurants in Barcelona
In Barcelona, traditional Catalan cooking has always included vegetables, pulses, and grains just as much as its more famous seafood and cured meats. While it’s often assumed the city doesn’t cater well to vegetarians and vegans, that’s not true. There are a huge number of vegetarian restaurants in Barcelona that are very welcoming to plant-based eaters.
Walk through most areas in Barcelona and you’ll come across everything from casual falafel joints to modern plant-forward restaurants and veggie-friendly tapas bars. Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, or traveling with meat-eaters, you can eat very well here without feeling too limited.
There are countless options for different diets, and on our Barcelona food tours, we work closely with family-run restaurants to make sure vegetarians are properly looked after too. If you’re a vegetarian coming to Barcelona and wondering where to eat, this guide is for you! We’ll cover our favorite meatless eateries, veggie-friendly tapas bars, and more.
What Vegetarian Dining Looks Like in Barcelona
Little known to many, there are actually quite a number of vegetarian dishes that are highly regarded in Barcelona. Plates like pa amb tomàquet, escalivada, tortilla, salads, and vegetable tapas are all naturally vegetarian or can easily be adapted to different diets.
Alongside these traditional options, there has been a clear increase in modern vegetarian and vegan restaurants, as well as ‘flexitarian’ kitchens popping up around the city. While vegetables are the focus in some, meat and fish are available in a handful of establishments as well.
In this guide, we cover both fully vegetarian restaurants and vegetarian-friendly places, so it’s useful for both solo vegetarians and mixed groups.

Vegetarian-Friendly Tapas Bars and Catalan Kitchens

Being vegetarian is no reason to miss out on tapas. Many popular locations do vegetarian tapas and Catalan dishes without advertising themselves as such, offering plenty of veg-focused plates worth indulging in.
VELADA — Tapas Plant-Based y Cócteles en Barcelona in Ciutat Vella is one of the more widely known options, specializing in small vegan plates that are equally suitable for vegetarians. The interiors lean towards the trendy side of things, making the dining experience all the more enjoyable.
The golden-fried bravas served with aioli and chili oil are a highlight at this plant-based restaurant in Barcelona, as are the pickled artichokes.
Another spot that we can’t go on further without mentioning is Faire — Tapas & Wine in Eixample. Places that claim to serve some of the best tapas in Barcelona are usually overselling themselves, but Faire is a genuine exception.
They use only organic and locally sourced ingredients, with both meat and veg options, served in a vibrant setting. The roasted miso aubergine, finished with a citrusy yogurt sauce, is a dish that keeps many people coming back, and rightly so.
You may also find yourself at Bubita Bar during your search for vegan tapas, and if you do, you’re in luck, as their recipes are some of the tastiest in the city.
This plant-based gastro bar with an intimate vibe has built a loyal following among Barcelona’s vegetarian community, known for its creative recipes, flavorful sangrias, and fruity cocktails. The sun-dried tomato hummus and porcini mushroom croquettes are among the most beloved dishes on the menu.
How to Eat Well as a Vegetarian in Barcelona
- Know a few basic phrases
Brushing up on some key Spanish terms before you arrive will make ordering considerably easier. Words like verduras (vegetables), legumbres (legumes), queso (cheese), huevo (egg), and the phrases ‘sin carne’ and ‘sin pescado’ (without meat, without fish) will all come in handy when eating at spots that sell both veggie and meaty dishes.
- Don’t be afraid to request changes
If you want to remove meat from a recipe when visiting a healthy restaurant in Barcelona, it’s perfectly reasonable to ask the server to do it. Requesting the kitchen to leave out ham, swap out meat-based stock, or suggest a vegetable alternative is fine, as long as you ask clearly and politely.
- Consider seasonal dishes
A lot of Catalan cooking is built around seasonal vegetables, such as artichokes, tomatoes, mushrooms, and more. Ordering what’s in season means you’re getting the best produce available, and the difference in flavor is usually noticeable.
- Integrate veggie restaurants with local bars
Plan your day around vegetarian restaurants while weaving in stops at local bars along the way. A vegetarian lunch, a drink or two somewhere in between, and an evening of tapas at a mixed venue is a great way to experience the city on your terms.
- Know the right times and booking situation
The main vegetarian restaurants in Barcelona tend to fill up as the day goes on, particularly in the evenings. Reserve a table wherever possible, and always check the opening hours in advance, as some spots close on certain weekdays when the city is a little quieter.
