Alella isn’t on your typical tourist list… but it hasn’t always been such a hidden gem. With its distinctive fast-draining topsoil and unique microclimate in the hills overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Alella has produced exceptional wines since Roman times, served to Roman Emperors no less! This fame continued into the Middle Ages, where Alella wines were served at the court of the Kings of Aragon.
Today, Alella is the smallest wine producing region in Cataluyna to gain coveted European Denomination of Origen (D.O.) status. But for some reason it isn’t terribly well known abroad. Our mission is to change that – because it isn’t right you miss out on this secret.
This is not another wine tour where you will form part of a caravan of tourist buses and given the same speech over and over.
This premium full-day excursion lasts approximately 7 hours, during which we’ll visit 2 small wineries and enjoy a leisurely home-style Catalan lunch.
Our mission is to make you fall in love (or fall in love again) with our local variety – the pansa blanca. Over the course of the tour you’ll try white wines, sparking wines, and an aperitif all made from this single, delicately flavoured grape. We will also try the region’s best local reds and rosé.
In addition to these excellent wines, you will have a delicious, home-style, traditional Catalan lunch.
You will be accompanied by a friendly, knowledgeable guide at all times, who will tell you stories about Catalan/Spanish history and gastronomy and will make sure this is one of the highlights of your vacation in Barcelona.
A driver will be at our disposal all day long, in a private, comfortable and clean vehicle.
You will be picked up at your hotel by a private chauffeur. In about half an hour you will arrive at our first vineyard, set in a secluded valley with views towards Montserrat. Here we will see a gorgeous 19th century family manor home, which still contains the original wine-making tools used when the building was first constructed. We will tour the vineyards and gardens, followed by a tasting of their excellent wines, including a delicious sweet wine and also their own olive oil.
We’ll next pause for a relaxed but filling traditional Catalan lunch (and of course, with more Catalan and Spanish wines to accompany your meal).
In the afternoon we’ll continue our journey, visiting a modern winery that makes truly amazing ecological wines. You will learn about their methods and enjoy a tasting of 4 more wines (including a beautiful sparkling white). This winery is wonderfully located on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Can you think of a better way to end the day?
Time permitting, we may call in to a local wine shop which sells everything offered by the region, in bottles, or if you like, you can fill a plastic jug from wine kept in a barrel! A nice option, should you wish to fit this stop in, to be able to bring some wine back to your hotel or indeed back home.
All good things come to an end, unfortunately, but our private driver will safely see you back to your hotel. There, well, that’s your business! But many of our guests enjoy a quick siesta before joining one of our food tours in the evening.
By the end of your excursion, you will have learnt a great deal about the region, its unique setting and geological properties, and about our beloved pansa blanca, all the while enjoying conversation and laughter with your private guide.
Please note that the exact order in which we visit our establishments may change due to their availability and/or climate conditions. A detailed run-down of your tour will be sent to you a few days before the day of the excursion.
The cost of the tour is 285.50€ per person. To book, just fill out the form on this page.
