Poble-Sec

Go off the beaten path for an authentic immersion in extraordinary tapas

Poble-Sec (Catalan for 'Dry village') is Barcelona’s old but vibrant performing arts district, a centrally located neighbourhood boasting elegant 19th-century architecture and the best hidden gem restaurants in town.

The neighbourhood has a rich history, having once been outside of the city’s walls and inhabited mainly by residents that couldn’t afford the higher prices for accommodation inside the walls. Nowadays it is known more for its ample offering of theatres and nightclubs, making it Barcelona’s top entertainment district.

Despite being so close to key landmarks of Barcelona, it doesn’t tend to be nearly as crowded or full of tourists as some other neighbourhoods. Plaça Espanya borders it to the west, the Ramblas or Boquería to the north and the port, museums and World Trade Center to the east. But here one can enjoy an evening here and see a “real” part of the city – an area much less inundated by tourists.

We fell in love with Poble Sec because of the incredible culinary offering it has had for the past few decades. The neighbourhood is a hotbed of young chefs running some of the most exciting restaurants in the city. This makes it the perfect setting for a tapas tour – the food is exceptional, with key traditional dishes offered with a little contemporary twist that go beyond the obvious, standard tapas.

Want to eat where the locals eat? See the real Barcelona and enjoy a more adventurous tapas offering? This is the tapas tour for you!

The HIGHLIGHT of our trip to Barcelona!! Esther took us to all of the best places and explained each item so well. It was a true taste of authentic Catalan food and drink! I highly recommend this to anyone traveling to Barcelona!!

An excellent food tour through the Gothic Quarter The restaurants we visited were perfect choices and if I had longer in Barcelona I would certainly revisit each one of them. Esther was a perfect guide, sharing not only her local knowledge of food and wine but also places of interest along the way. A great intro to Barcelona food scene.

The food was amazing!!! I was nervous about joining a food tour traveling solo, but our host Lorea was an expert at keeping conversations flowing amongst the group. She shared history of the neighborhood we were in as well as the restaurants we visited. And, of course, the food was amazing!!!

Tapas, tips, and so much more! My wife and I had a wonderful private Tapas tour with Esther - she is an incredible guide, educator, and story teller! In between discovering the great food and drinks of Barcelona's El Born neighborhood, we learned so much about Catalonian history and Spanish culture. We highly recommend Esther and The Barcelona Taste tours!!

Tapas Tour - Great Experience We went to spots in downtown area, progressively getting better tapas as we migrated. Also, \*must do\* because I had the best paella of my life - hard to find that on Google maps or Yelp searches!

Excellent company and lovely food!! We really enjoyed our tour of tapas in the Gothic Quarter! Maria was brilliant company and the food and drink was fantastic! We would definitely recommend and will be booking another of these tours next time we visit! Ideally I'd book this tour at the start of a trip as you get lots of other recommendations that you can use for the rest of your visit.

Great food, very informative and lots of fun! We really enjoyed our tour through Poble-sec! Our charming guide Lorea did a fantastic job of describing the Barcelona and Spanish way of life, introduced us to a lovely selection of tapas bars and took time to explain the various dishes we were eating. We thoroughly recommend doing the tour!

The Barcelona Taste: because it's delicious

Barcelona is a major tourist destination – the number of guidebooks and websites devoted to the city is overwhelming! Which is why we started The Barcelona Taste ... to save you time so you can experience the best food Barcelona has to offer while side-stepping the crowds.

We take you to small, local businesses offering delicious, top quality food restaurants on our scrumptious tours – because they’re great. We visit, we taste and then we visit again and taste again. Ad infinitum! That’s our research.

We don’t take a “pile ‘em high” approach with our guests. Our focus is on providing the best possible quality in everything we do. This includes limiting our tours to very small numbers, to give personal attention and feed everyone well.
