Poble-Sec

Classic food with a contemporary twist

Poble-Sec (Catalan for 'Dry village') is Barcelona’s old but vibrant performing arts district, a centrally located neighbourhood boasting elegant 19th-century architecture. The neighbourhood is so named because it had no source of water, until a fountain was built in the late 19th century. Prior to this, the area was outside of the city’s walls and inhabited mainly by residents that couldn’t afford the higher prices for accommodation inside the walls. Once incorporated ( a small section of the original wall can still be found at the end of Paral·lel) it became a dynamic part of Barcelona, generating electricity that would power the city’s development throughout the late 19th century and well into the 20th. Nowadays it is known more for its ample offering of theatres and nightclubs, making it Barcelona’s top entertainment district.

Despite being so close to key landmarks of Barcelona, it doesn’t tend to be nearly as crowded or full of tourists as some other neighbourhoods. Plaça Espanya borders it to the west, the Ramblas or Boquería to the north and the port, museums and World Trade Center to the east. But here one can enjoy an evening here and feel like they’re seeing a “real” part of the city – an area much less inundated by tourists.

We fell in love with Poble Sec because of the incredible culinary offering it has had for the past few decades. The neighbourhood is a hotbed of young chefs running some of the most exciting restaurants in the city. This makes it the perfect setting for a tapas tour – the food is exceptional, with key traditional dishes offered with a little contemporary twist.

What could you be eating on your Barcelona tapas tour?

The great thing about tapas is that there's always something for everyone. Whether you love meat, fish, vegetables – or all of the above – there's sure to be a delicious dish to devour. Here's some samples to whet your appetite...

Everything about this tour was amazing Our wonderful guide Esther was great company and took us to places we just wouldn’t have found for ourselves, explaining everything along the way and providing a touch of local colour to the whole experience. Incredible food, great drinks and company. A fantastic experience all round.

My second tour with Barcelona Taste The tour was in the Gothic Quarter with Esther - she was fabulous, gave us interesting information about the area and brought us to different restaurants for wonderful food! Esther was very fun and everyone in our party loved the tour. I highly recommend!!

Incredibly delicious and authentic dishes We had an amazing tour around Eixample with Lorea, our super friendly & knowledgeable guide! She helped us get out of our comfort zone and as a result we enjoyed some incredibly delicious and authentic dishes that we normally wouldn't have tried on our own. The restaurants she brought us to were fantastic. I can't wait to go back and take another one of their tapas/wine tours in one of the other neighborhoods!

We really enjoyed the tapas tour! All of the food was very good and it wasn’t “the usual” tapas. Everything we tried was new to us, except paella. And the paella was very good. We had more than enough food! Maria, our guide, was very knowledgeable and fun. Instead of having wine at every stop, we experienced vermouth and cava as well.

Extensive knowledge of Barcelona's food scene I must say that it was an exceptional experience that exceeded all expectations. The small group size was a significant advantage, as it created an intimate atmosphere & allowed for more personalized attention & interaction. We felt like we were exploring the city with a knowledgeable friend who was eager to introduce us to her favorite local spots. The tour was not just about food; it was an immersive cultural experience that left me with a deep appreciation for the city & its rich gastronomic traditions.

A great lay of the land We went to 3 different tapas restaurants - all were slightly off the beaten path and all were excellent. Maribel explained all the foods as well as the neighborhoods that we walked through. We also learned some Spanish history. Maribel answered all our questions and gave great restaurant suggestions for our following days in Spain. I would suggest you do this tour on one of your first nights in Barcelona, as it gives you a great lay of the land if you've never visited before.

DON'T MISS THIS!!!! We went to 3, off the beaten path tapas restaurants - all had excellent food. I especially enjoyed the beef cheeks. Maribel did all of the food ordering, with respect to dietary restrictions. She answered all of our questions and gave us info and history of the neighborhoods we traversed. She was friendly and very professional. I would recommend doing this tour on one of your first nights in Barcelona, as it gives you a great lay of the land and references to other good places to eat and visit. Enjoy!

Phenomenol experience enjoying fine local food and drink favorites. Our guide Maribel was lovely company and arranged phenomenal tastings of traditional foods as well as some with a gourmet modern twist. The food was plentiful and varied and suited to our tastes. There was no shortage of matching local alcohol/wine as well. We had an intimate tour with just 4 of us, meeting 2 others for an enjoyable evening. If you can, do it early in your arrival as you will get an extensive list of other restaurants to try as well. Only wish we could stay long-term so we could try them all!

A wonderful evening We sampled delicious food and some local wines at each stop. Each of the stops on our tour was quaint and the dishes that were selected for us to try were delicious. We felt welcomed in each of the restaurants we visited and enjoyed the engaging conversation and information provided by our host, Tito. This small group tour felt like an evening with friends, old and new. Highly recommended!
